How to calculate FTP

I have the KICKR. How does one effectively use it to calculate ones FTP?

FTP Calculation

There are lots of ways to determine FTP. Check out this workout http://imobileintervals.com/workout/20-minute-ftp-test for how to do it on the KICKR, and some notes about the process.

Thanks for the link it is

Thanks for the link it is very informative. If I look at the workout I must check ERG DATA value uses either FTP or watts. Should I guess at FTP and use that or choose watts?

Reading the data/splits

I have just done this session for the first time - in fact my first proper session on the Kickr. Now I have completed how do I review the results as per the splits. All I ma seeming to find are the results for the complete session and really just want to see the data for the 20minute effort so as can work out my FPT?

ftp calculation

Hi,

You'll need to upload the result to iMobileIntervals or another system like Training Peaks, then you need to find the average wattage for the 20 minute interval. multiply by .95 and that's the FTP.

On iMobileIntervals, after uploading, go to the workout result and hover your mouse above the interval and it will display date for the interval.

Using workouts

This 20 minute FTP test workout is designed to be used as-is whether you have an FTP configured or not. You don't need to check ERG data at all, and you don't need to clone or edit it to use it.

This particular workout specifies an FTP% for the 5 minute "warm-up" interval, and if you have FTP configured it will control the KICKR resistance, but if you don't have FTP configured it will ignore that and you will need to shift gears to get the right resistance for your effort.

You'll note that the 20 minute has no intensity zone or ERG value set; that's because you need to find your own pace for that interval.

"You'll note that the 20 minute has no intensity zone or ERG value set; that's because you need to find your own pace for that interval."

How does the KICKR work when you don't have anything set for that 20 min interval? Does it provide more resistance as I pedal harder similar to a fluid trainer? I've read that on a computrainer you can set it to simulate a 2% grade. Is there a way to do a workout that simulates hills vs FTP/Watts based workouts on the KICKR via IMI?

standard resistance mode

If there is no ERG value, zone or resistance level specified for the interval, the KICKR will be in the default fixed resistance level 0, which simulates riding on level pavement. There is resistance applied by the electronic brake, simulating the increased resistance of going faster through the wind and over the ground.

You can manually increase the resistance using our app's controls (up to fixed resistance level 9) or you can preprogram the fixed resistance level in the ERG field of the interval on this website. Any number used less than 10 will be considered a resistance level, not a watts value or FTP percentage.
