audio alerts or voice fail after phone rings

iphone 4S, IOS 7.0.4, imi version 3.3
During a workout I received a phone call that I ignored and all audio alerts stopped. I tried going into settings while the workout was still running and toggling the alerts off and on. I also turned the voice on. as well as pausing the workout and moving the toggles. nothing brought the sound alerts or the voice back for the remainder of the workout.
This has happened both time i have received a phone call during a workout.
